About Berengarra

St George's Health Service aged care service

The Victorian Government worked with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) to build Berengarra, a 90-bed residential facility at the St George’s Health Service site in Kew.

Berengarra opened in 2021. The accommodation provides residents with a comfortable home-like environment with modern facilities, private rooms, garden outlooks and access to domestic style kitchens.

The facility also includes dedicated beds for aged people with mental health issues.

Facility Name

SVHM’s Art Curator Monique Silk and the project team, in consultation with the SVHM Aboriginal Health Unit, worked closely with Gail Smith, Wurundjeri Elder, to identify potential names for the facility.

The agreed facility name was Berengarra, which means the land around Kew.

How we care

Berengarra has been designed to deliver best practice person-centred care and include aged persons’ mental health accommodation.

Person-centred care means that services change to be more flexible to meet people’s needs in a manner that is best for them. This involves working with people and their families to find the best way to provide their care.
