The Victorian Government is working with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) to build a new 90 bed aged residential facility at the current St George’s Health Service site in Kew.
The accommodation will provide residents with a comfortable home-like environment with modern facilities, private rooms, garden outlooks and access to domestic style kitchens.
The facility will also include dedicated beds for aged people with mental health issues.
SVHM’s Monique Silk and the project team, in consultation with SVHM Aboriginal Health Unit, worked closely with Gail Smith, Wurundjeri Elder, to identify potential names for the facility.
The agreed upon facility name is Berengarra, which means the land around Kew.

Berengarra has been designed to deliver best practice person-centred care and include aged persons’ mental health accommodation.
Person-centred care means that services change to be more flexible to meet people’s needs in a manner that is best for them. This involves working with people and their families to find the best way to provide their care.
The exact opening date of Berengarra is yet to be confirmed, at this stage the plan is to commence welcoming new residents towards the end of the year.
