Clinical Trials

What is a clinical trial?

Clinical trials are a type of research involving human volunteers dedicated to generating new high quality evidence-based medical interventions. The purpose of a clinical trial is to evaluate new approaches in treating particular conditions or diseases under controlled conditions. This involves determining how well people respond to new treatments, what side effects there are, and how well they are tolerated. Clinical trials are not only essential in the development of new medicines and medical devices they are also conducted to find new uses for existing medicines.

St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne is at the forefront of innovative research making us a premier site for medical research and clinical trials.

National Clinical Trials Governance Framework

In 2020, St Vincent’s Health Network, Sydney and Melbourne has been selected as one of the 14 pilot sites for the pilot of the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework. The full list of pilot sites selected can be found here.

The Governance Framework aims to ensure that clinical trials are conducted in a safe environment and in a high-quality manner for improved health outcomes for patients and the community. The Governance Framework is based on the NSQHS Standard 1: Clinical Governance Standard and Standard 2: Partnering with Consumers.Under the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme, it is intended the Governance Framework will strengthen governance arrangements for hospital administrators, health services that deliver clinical trials, private companies, trial sponsors and trial investigators.

If you wish to know more about the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework and St Vincent’s Health Network, Sydney and Melbourne participation as a pilot site, please see SVHM NCTGF Bulletin 1

NCTGF Implementation Begins in 2023

Assessments will commence in May 2023, in alignment with assessment of health service organisations to the NSQHS Standards.

By participating in clinical trials, you can contribute to advancing health and medical knowledge. Clinical trials are necessary to show that new treatments are safe and effective for use in humans before they go onto the market.

Translation of health and medical knowledge into clinical treatments means that patients receive the most innovative care and treatments available.
