Course overview

Rates of suicide are increasing both globally and locally. The more people who are able to identify people at risk of suicide and keep them safe until help arrives may go some way toward addressing this trend. Nurses are often the first staff to gain a sense that a patient may be at risk of suicide.

safeTALK is an alertness workshop that prepares staff, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper.

SafeTALK is an introductory workshop that equips participants with a solid framework for identifying people at risk of suicide. It is well designed to suit nurses in their day to day work with patients and identify those that are at risk of suicide; how to discuss the subject of suicide and how to connect someone at risk with someone who can keep them safe.

On completion of this training participants will achieve a greater readiness and confidence in their ability to intervene with people potentially at risk of suicide and assist them to keep safe.

The training program is designed for participants to practice new knowledge and skills. It is experiential and involves participants actively in the process using video presentations and some small group work.

This training is a beginning component of the Livingworks suite of suicide intervention training. People completing this training sometimes express interest in completing the two day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) program but it is not a requirement.

The second half of the day involves how to manage challenging behaviours in the workplace.

The training will be provided by John Forster, Psychiatric Consultation and Liaison Nurse and Antonella Ursini, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Behaviour Management.
