Does SVHM have an Electronic Medical Record (EMR)?
Currently, SVHM does not have a full EMR. Works are well underway to prepare for the implementation of our EMR across the entire health service.
Is car parking available at SVHM, Fitzroy campus?
- Yes, SVHM have multiple car-parks available for staff, including 3 on-site and others nearby. Staff are able to apply for a car parking pass to access the on-site parking facilities.
- Alternatively, we are very fortunate to have several public transport options including train, tram and buses, located very close by.
- Secure bike storage is also available on site for those who would like an active commute.
How do I know I am the right fit for SVHM?

What type of supervision will I have day to day?
All rotations on offer at SVHM comply with the requirements of the NFPMT and PMCV Accreditation standards.
Supervision will be provided by your allocated Term Supervisor along with other senior colleagues. Your clinical supervisors are responsible for overseeing patient care, as well as providing you with feedback, and contributing to your mandatory assessments throughout the year.

At SVHM you will be supported by a number of people, from various areas within the Hospital. This local support includes:

- Allocated Intern mentor

Do you offer Salary Packaging?
Yes, SVHM offers Salary Packaging through Smart. Further details are discussed at orientation with opportunity to ask questions of the Smart Salary representative.
How many days of Orientation will I receive?
SVHM offers a comprehensive orientation program which includes a mix of informative lectures, practical skills and assessments, and a full shadow shift with the outgoing Intern. In 2026 the Orientation program went for 3 days.
What will we cover during orientation?
Our orientation program is designed to make you feel safe, valued and welcome to our organisation. We provide you with the necessary information and resources to hit the ground running on your first day. Additional information designed to orientate you to your local unit will also be provided by the unit upon commencement.
Will there be any assessments completed during Orientation?
Yes, it is expected that you will complete your Basic Life Support assessment during orientation.
What education programs are available to Interns at SVHM?
The Medical Education Team coordinates a comprehensive Intern Education program which runs weekly on a Tuesday from 12:30pm – 1:30pm. This program is designed in alignment with the JMO Victoria Curriculum, NFPMT learning outcome statements, and input from our JMS Education Committee. We run a variety of sessions including didactic lectures, small group tutorials, practical skills workshop (eg. suturing and plastering), and deteriorating patient simulations. Each term is also wrapped up with an End of Term feedback discussion.
Several local units, including General Medicine and Mental Health, also provide informative weekly education sessions for junior medical staff. These programs focus on topics that are highly relevant to their local departments, and complement the weekly program provided by the Medical Education Team.
Our Pre-SET society runs regular afterhours workshops and lectures covering a wide range of topics, for junior medical staff with an interest in surgery.
The Medical Education Team have a dedicated Intranet page to help keep junior medical staff informed about ‘What’s on in Education’ around our organisation.
Will I have to work night shift in PGY1/Intern year?
Yes, during your rotation through the Emergency Department, you will have to complete some night duties as part of a rotating roster. This is the only unit where PGY1 staff will be required to work overnight shifts.
Will I have to do after hours cover shifts?
Yes, most rotations have an element of after-hours work, covering various units. Cover shifts are rostered in advance and form part of your weekly contracted hours.
Does SVHM pay overtime?
Yes, we strongly believe in being paid for every hour that you work. We pay overtime and the process of submitting overtime claims has been streamlined via an online form.
What are my annual leave entitlements?
You are entitled to 5 weeks of annual leave in your PGY1/Intern year. Two (2) weeks are usually allocated within your Emergency rotation at SVHM, unless otherwise discussed with the Medical Workforce Unit.
Three (3) weeks of annual leave are allocated at the end of your PGY1 year from mid-January to the start of February, in line with commencing the new clinical year.
Am I entitled to exam / study / conference leave?
Yes, as per the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement for Victorian Doctors in Training, you are entitled to:
- Conference leave: one week paid (application by 31 March or three months-notice). Two weeks additional at employer discretion.
- Exam leave: eight calendar days per year, Guarantee to three clear days off prior to exam
How are rotations allocated?
Following successful allocation to St Vincent’s Hospital, the master roster with all available rotation options will be sent to you for preferencing. Interns are asked to rank their rotation line preferences and are allocated accordingly.
Can I swap rotations?
Yes, after you have been sent your rotations, there will be an opportunity to swap with your colleagues. The swap needs to ensure your new rotations meet the criteria for the NFPMT ensuring exposure to each of the four Clinical Experiences with maximum 50% of time in any specialty and 25% in a subspecialty. These swap requests are submitted to the Medical Workforce Unit to review. The Medical Workforce Unit will do their best to accommodate these swaps but is not guaranteed.
What secondment hospitals is SVHM affiliated with for Internship?
We send our PGY1 Interns to:
- The Royal Children's Hospital
- Southwest Healthcare - Warrnambool Hospital
- Swan Hill District Health
- Western District Health Service – Hamilton Base Hospital
Is accommodation provided at secondment Hospitals?
Yes, accommodation is provided at our rural/regional secondment hospitals:
- South West Healthcare - Warrnambool Base Hospital
- Swan Hill District Health
- Western District Health Service – Hamilton Base Hospital
Please note, hospital accommodation is not provided when rotating to facilities closer to Metropolitan Melbourne, including the Royal Children's Hospital.
How many PGY1 positions will SVHM have in 2027?
SVHM anticipates employing approximately 50 PGY1 staff in 2027, however, this exact figure is subject to change. The number of PGY1 positions closely reflects the availability of PGY2 positions that will also be on offer, to promote a smooth and continuous experience for staff wishing to complete both PGY1 and PGY2 at SVHM.
Do you accept all candidates from all eligibility / priority groups?
Yes, SVHM accepts candidates from all eligibility categories. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in origin, and we have a dedicated Internship stream for these individuals.
SVHM is required to comply with the processes and guidelines of the Intern Match run through PMCV. Please refer to the PMCV website (CLICK HERE) for all information on the match.
Do you require submission of a CV and Cover Letter?
Candidates should follow the instructions and requirements for your application (ie. Curriculum Vitae (CV), Cover Letters and Clinical References) as outlined on the PMCV website. You do not need to submit anything directly to SVHM as part of your application or ranking.
Upon successful recruitment, as part of the SVHM onboarding process, you will be required to submit a CV and an optional cover letter.
