About Our Program

Your PGY1 Intern year at St Vincent's Hospital aligns with the National Framework for Pre-Vocational Medical Training (NFPMT). The NFPMT is a two-year program designed to support and strengthen the longitudinal learning experiences of Pre-Vocational Medical Trainees.

Your internship is based around 5 rotations both on site at SVHM Fitzroy Campus, Caritas Christi in Kew and at our secondment hospitals. Each rotation offers varying clinical experiences and foundational skills that are essential for your future practice. Please review our list of PGY1 rotations available in 2026, for an indication of what may be on offer next year.

Please note, there are specific requirements set by the Medical Board of Australia to certify successful completion of PGY1 Internship:

This includes:

  • Completion of 47 weeks of clinical experience, inclusive professional development leave
  • Completion of terms with exposure to all four clinical experiences:
  1. Undifferentiated illness care
  2. Chronic Illness care
  3. Acute and critical illness care
  4. Peri-operative/procedural care
  • The Assessment Review Panel at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne will make a global judgement on whether you have reached the required standard and achieved all Pre-Vocational Outcome Statements as set out in the National Framework of Pre-Vocational Training (NFPMT). The panel will review your progress throughout the year based on:
  • Beginning of Term Discussions
  • Mid Term Assessments
  • End of Term Assessments
  • Entrustable Professional Activities

Orientation

Your Internship will begin with a comprehensive and compulsory three-day Orientation program. This is a combination of interactive lectures and practical upskilling sessions (including cannulation and basic life support, amongst others), as well as a Shadow Shift with a near-peer to support you.

Orientation for the 2027 Intern cohort will begin Wednesday 6th January 2027.

Education

St Vincent's Hospital provides a robust Intern Education program, with weekly protected education sessions tailor-made for Interns. Our education program is developed in alignment with the JMO Victoria Curriculum, NFPMT learning outcome statements, and input from our JMS Education Committee.

We run a variety of sessions across the year including didactic lectures, small group tutorials, problem-based learning (PBL’s), practical skills workshops (ie. suturing and plastering), and simulations. Each term is also wrapped up with an End of Term feedback discussion.

Committees and Involvement

We encourage all Interns to take an active role in hospital governance through the Junior Medical Staff (JMS) Reference Group, the JMS Education Committee, the RMO Society, or being a St Vincent's Hospital Health Service Representative at JMO Victoria. Your experience and contributions are highly appreciated.
