90 people will soon call Berengarra, St Vincent’s new $55.57 million public aged residential facility, home.

Named after the local Aboriginal word for ‘the land around Kew’, the 90-room facility will provide best-practice care and integrated health and wellbeing services in a home-like environment. The dementia-friendly facility includes 90 private rooms with ensuites split over three levels.

Angela Nolan, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne CEO, invited Luke Donnellan, Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers, and John Kennedy, the Member for Hawthorn, to tour the facility, part of the Victorian Government’s plans to modernise public sector residential care in metropolitan Melbourne.

“We’re thrilled to be working in partnership with the Victorian Government on this innovative facility that will support Victorians for many generations to come,” Angela says.

These new homes for older Australians will allow them to maintain their dignity and their independence.

“What’s different about Berengarra is its person-centred model of care,” says Angela. “At St Vincent’s, we believe the transition into a residential aged facility is an important and significant step for many people and should be a positive experience.

“Person-centred care means putting people and their families at the centre of decision making, listening to, and empowering them to take charge. Being compassionate, thinking about things from the person’s point of view and being respectful are all important.”

Residents who transition to living in this new long-term accommodation will benefit significantly from this model, as well as a space that reflects a comfortable, well-considered and safe living environment.

The facility features comfortable and home-like environments, with garden outlooks, natural light and common areas for socialising and leisure.

The first residents are expected to move into Berengarra in the coming months.
