As a HMO3/HMO3+ resident, you can pursue your specific path of clinical interest through our various Residency streams, namely: 

  • General Stream 
  • Critical Care Stream 
  • Basic Physician Training (BPT)
  • Surgical Stream

Our PGY3/HMO3/HMO3+ applications for 2025 have now closed for all streams. 

General Stream (HMO3/HMO3+)

As our fastest growing stream, the general stream gives HMO3/HMO3+ doctors the perfect opportunity to pursue a general practice career path, or simply deepen your clinical experience and exposure, prior to committing to a specific vocational pathway. 

N.B. Applications for General Stream Residents for 2024 and now closed. Mid-year intake applications will open in April/May 2024. Please watch this page for further details. 

Potential Rotations and Rostering 

As a successful General Stream Resident (HMO3/HMO3+), you will have the opportunity to nominate your rotation preferences.

Available rotations do change from time to time, however, below are some examples of rotations available as a General Stream Resident.

The Medical Workforce Unit (MWU) will always aim to accommodate leave requests, or other rostering requests, such as conference leave, however please be aware these may not always be able to be facilitated. Any leave requests or rostering preferences should be submitted to MWU as early as possible.

Critical Care Stream (HMO3/HMO3+)

One of our most popular streams, the critical care stream gives HMO3/HMO3+ doctors exposure to high acuity clinical areas. 

Potential Rotations and Rostering 

As a successful Critical Care Stream Resident, you will have the opportunity to nominate your rotation preferences. 

Available rotations do change from time to time, however, below are some examples of rotations available as a Critical Care Stream Resident. 

Example HMO3 Rotations include: 

  • Anaesthetics – St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne 
  • Anaesthetics – Werribee Mercy Hospital 
  • Emergency – St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne 
  • Emergency – Warrnambool & District Base Hospital 
  • Intensive Care – St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne

  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology – Werribee Mercy Hospital

Basic Physician Training (BPT) Stream

SVHM has built a solid reputation in recent decades, as a leading health service for Basic Physician Training (BPT). As a BPT, you will have exposure to a wide range of general and specialty medicine areas, along with solid mentorship and structured educational support, including bespoke tutorials and lectures. 

SVHM provides a well- supported environment for trainees undertaking the RACP PREP program. The hospital is accredited as a level 3 hospital by the RACP and has a structured and comprehensive training program providing individual support for all trainees. SVHM has an outstanding reputation over many years for success in the RACP examinations.

Surgical Stream (HMO3/HMO3+)

The Surgical Stream allows early career doctors to be exposed to a range of general and specialty surgical rotations, in order to help you meet SET training pre-requisites. St Vincent’s has a very active Pre-SET Society, along with mentorship and SET surgical supervisors, to assist you on your career path.
