We provide phone-based advice and assessments as outlined below

Phone-based advice
The VDDS provides advice to anyone about the mental health of people with an intellectual disability in relation to:  

  • Presentation of mental disorders
  • Mental health assessment
  • Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Treatment for a mental disorder
  • Management of mental and behavioural disorders

Assessment and Consultation

Triage
Calls can be made to the VDDS Monday to Friday during working hours of 8.30am-5.00pm. VDDS staff will undertake phone based triage to facilitate timely access to appropriate services.

Assessment

-Assessments  for Consumers receiving a Service from one of the States 21 AMHS will be provided to people with a developmental disability (autism or intellectual disability) who:

• Appear to have a serious mental illness or mental disorder
• Have associated significant levels of disturbance and psychosocial disability due to their illness or disorder
• Are referred by their local AMHS

-People who reside within the catchment area of either the Northern Division or the Western Metropolitan area of Western Division Department of  the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are eligible to be assessed by the VDDS if they:

• Have a developmental disability (autism or intellectual disability)
• Appear to have a serious mental illness or mental disorder.
• Have associated significant levels of disturbance and psychosocial disability due to their illness or disorder and are unable to access appropriate services or are involved with the Disability Justice system

 

Extended Consultation and Treatment

 

In exceptional circumstances, we will undertake treatment and management until an appropriate local service provider can be found. This may include management of medication, psychosocial interventions and referral to appropriate services

Case Management

We do not provide case management
