About Our Program

Internship at St Vincent's Hospital follows the National Framework for Pre-Vocational Medical Training (NFPMT) which was implemented in January 2024. This framework is a two-year program, that is designed to support and strengthen the learning experiences of Pre-Vocational Medical Trainees.

Your Internship is based around 5 rotations both on site at SVHM Fitzroy Campus and at our secondment hospitals. Each rotation offers varying clinical experiences and foundational skills that are essential for your future practice. Please review our list of Intern rotations available in 2024, for an indication of what may be on offer in 2025.

Please note, PMCV stipulates that all Interns must successfully complete at least 47 weeks equivalent full-time experience in supervised clinical practice. In order to facilitate this, SVHM allocates all Interns two weeks of annual leave during the clinical year, and a further three weeks at the completion of PGY1, before commencing your PGY2 year.

Orientation

Your Internship will begin with a comprehensive and compulsory three-day Orientation. This program is a combination of interactive lectures and practical upskilling sessions (including cannulation and basic life support amongst others), as well as a Shadow Shift with a near-peer to support you.

Orientation for the 2025 Intern cohort will begin Wednesday 8th January 2025.

Education

St Vincent's Hospital provides a robust Intern Education program, with weekly education sessions tailor-made for Interns, including practical sessions in our state-of-the-art simulation lab, suturing and small tutorial group work. Each term there is also a dedicated end of term feedback session to reflect on your completed term.

Committees and Involvement

We encourage all interns to take an active role in hospital governance through the JMS Reference Group, the JMS Education Committee, the RMO Society, or being a St Vincent's Hospital Health Service Representative at JMO Victoria. Your experience and contributions are highly appreciated.
