Our vision

The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery will help achieve three major health outcomes for Australians:

  • Improved management of chronic illness
  • Ageing well
  • Prevention of disease

Located at the St Vincent’s Fitzroy campus, the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery will be designed from the ground up to maximise collaboration and sharing of resources among its world leading partners.

It will provide the third point of a triangle, next to the two other major research precincts in Prahran and Parkville, consolidating Melbourne’s international medical research position.

Teaching is a major component of the Centre. It will incorporate the University of Melbourne Clinical School, building
on the 100 year relationship it has with St Vincent’s, as well as the Australian Catholic University.

These onsite relationships will ensure research becomes an integral part of doctor, nursing and allied health
training and practice.

We have an obligation to support the future of Australians and their health by advancing medical solutions to the health
crises of today and tomorrow.

Our focus is on:

  • Tissue engineering
  • Drug design and delivery
  • Medical bionics

This focus aims to:

  • Prevent disease and chronic illness
  • Invent treatments to limit the effects of chronic illness
  • Improve the way we age
  • Educate tomorrow’s medical, scientific, nursing and allied health communities
  • Give patients life-changing outcomes.

New technologies are being developed and translated into clinical practice. Future generations of clinicians and researchers are being inspired and educated. The opportunity for Melbourne and Australia to enjoy the best health in the world is here. The public health cost savings and commercial potential of outcomes are enormous.
