Our goal

The goal of the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery is to prevent and treat illness by applying engineering principles and techniques to medical problems.

This biomedical engineering focus within a medical research precinct will be the first of its kind in Australia. It will strengthen Australia’s capacity to prevent many healthcare problems, particularly those arising from the increasing prevalence of chronic disease and the disability, frailty and morbidity associated with ageing.

The Centre will build on a wealth of existing expertise in three biomedical engineering areas across the partner organisations: tissue engineering, drug design and delivery, and medical bionics.

Research outcomes generated from this Centre could have extraordinary benefits to the Australian population, the Australian public healthcare budget, the Australian economy and Australia’s next generation of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, researchers and engineers.
