St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne provides adult
medical, surgical and mental health services and a range of community
and outreach services. The Hospital is a major teaching, research and
tertiary referral centre situated on the fringe of Melbourne's central
business district.
The main campus of St. Vincent's is in Fitzroy,
bounded by Victoria
Parade, Nicholson Street, Fitzroy Street and Gertrude Street.
A feature of the campus is the in-patient building, a $160million
facility that was opened in 1995. In-patient and ambulatory care is
provided in a range of medical and surgical specialties, supported by
allied health services.
The Hospital operates a number of services from other
sites around Melbourne, including mental health, community care and
St. Vincent's Correctional Health Service at Port Phillip Prison. St.
Vincent's Pathology has a number of collection centres in the
community.
History
St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne opened in 1893. In
its first year around 2,500 patients were treated in the
"low-roofed, old fashioned boarding house", as one newspaper
described it.
