St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne has an outstanding reputation as a leader in
undergraduate and postgraduate medical Education. Our commitment is to provide
excellence in patient care and we make every effort to provide our health
personnel with a wide variety of learning and on the job training opportunities.
We strive to be at the forefront of innovation in education and have recently
purchased the state of the art Human Patient Simulator.
Simulation has been used in aviation for many years. All pilots are required
to spend a certified number of hours practising and refining their skills.
How do health professionals such as doctors, nurses and paramedics - practise
their skills in a safe environment? The Human Patient Simulator.
What is a Human Simulator?
The Human Simulator is a sophisticated integration of software and hardware
built around a human mannequin. The Mannequin breathes, has pulses and can
respond to intravenous drugs, CPR, defibrillation, intubation, ventilation,
catheterisation and many other procedures.
In short, the mannequin mirrors as close as is currently possible, the
physiological and pharmacological reactions of a human being.
The simulator comes with a number of pre-programmed patient profiles.
Alternatively instructors can develop their own profiles to suit their training
needs.
What does Human Simulation Offer?
The benefits of using such technology in the continuing education of both
junior and senior staff are enormous.
Benefit 1 : Safety
Human Simulation allows the health professional to concentrate on their
skills acquisition in a safe environment.
The risk of patients of learning of new procedure is removed and yet the
health professional is performing in a real time situation.
The health professional can make mistakes and receive expert feedback on the
spot to maximise learning and minimise future risk.
Benefit 2 : Teaching and learning to meet specific institutional objectives
The simulator can be used to address learning needs in a variety of areas,
such as clinical skills, minimising risk, team behaviour and management of
crisis situation.
Learning objectives are set and modules developed to meet these objectives.
An infinite number of scenarios and situations can be developed and used in
the training. Let your imagination be your only limitation.
Benefit 3 : Time for reflection
In the busy work environment it is difficult for health practitioners to have
time to adequately reflect on their practises or performance. This is an
essential component of adult learning.
All training sessions in the Human Simulation Centre are video taped for
detailed post-training analysis and debriefing. This allows the health care
professional to witness themselves at work and identify their strengths and
weaknesses.
