This department provides a surgical service for patients with diseases of the colon and rectum. Such diseases
include cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and other disorders of bowel function (e.g. constipation
and incontinence). A range of specialist services including laparoscopic colorectal surgery and advanced colonoscopic
procedures is performed.
Colorectal Clinic
The clinic will see patients with all anorectal conditions, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor
disorders, “abdominal pain”, other disorders of bowel function (e.g. constipation and incontinence) and symptom or history
based conditions (anorectal, abdominal, family history of colorectal cancer).
Appointments are only available to patients referred by a medical practitioner. Referrals are prioritised by senior medical
staff to ensure priority is given to patients with more urgent problems. Please send referrals via facsimile on 9288 3492
and assist us by including the following in your referral:
- reason for referral
- signs and symptoms
- duration of symptoms
- relevant past history and family history
Referral tools are available on the St. Vincent's Hospital Website www.svhm.org.au

In-Patient Services
The department has an allocation of 11 beds reserved for urgent and elective surgery.
Other Services
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy and fibre-optic sigmoidoscopy are available on a day patient basis. Because of the importance
of bowel preparation, patients should first be referred to the out-patient clinic or to one of the members
of the department. If colonoscopy is felt to be urgently required, the Registrar to the department
should be contacted on 9288 2211.
Anorectal Function Studies
In general, patients requiring these investigations should first be seen in consultation by a Colorectal
surgeon. The telephone number for enquiries is 9419 3377.
