St. George’s Aged Psychiatry Service
St. George’s Aged Psychiatry Service (SGAPS) serves older residents,
that is, people over 65, in the municipalities of Boroondara, Yarra and part of
the city of Darebin. The total aged
population of this area (Inner Urban East) is approximately 42,000 persons.
SGAPS provides a comprehensive service ranging from community care through
to residential care. There are approximately 105 equivalent full time clinical
staff.

wide range of information and advice for consumer and carers.

SGAPS comprises:
Aged Psychiatry Assessment
and Treatment Team (APATT)
The APATT visits people in their own homes.
Following assessment the team will devise a care plan and work with the person,
family, carers and other organisations/services to ensure the person is provided
with the most appropriate care and treatment.

Normanby
Unit – Acute Assessment and Treatment Unit
Normanby Unit is a 20 bed purpose-built unit that
provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for people in the acute phase of
a psychiatric illness.

The Karrimbi program provides case management for
those people who have complex care needs, are at risk of homelessness or require
longer intervention than the acute team can provide.

Auburn House (Hawthorn) and Riverside House (Richmond)
Two specialist psycho-geriatric nursing homes of 20
beds each are also part of the service.

The
teaching, training and research activities of SGAPS are managed through a close
affiliation with the Academic Unit for Psychiatry of Old Age, University of
Melbourne.
The
Academic Unit is located at Normanby Unit and also provides specialist aged
psychiatry clinics.
SGAPS
has a reputation for excellence in aged psychiatry service provision.
It conducts teaching and training activities with other service
