St. Vincent's Mental Health Service & 
St. George’s Aged Psychiatry Service

 

St. Vincent's Mental Health Service and St. George’s Aged Psychiatry Service provide clinical services to adult and aged residents of the Cities of Yarra and Boroondara and part of Northcote, in the inner east area of Melbourne.

Training

 

The Service provides teaching and clinical affiliations for undergraduate and postgraduate students in medicine, nursing, social work, occupational therapy and psychology.

 

The teaching, training and research activities of the St. Vincent’s Hospital, and University of Melbourne, Department of Psychiatry has resulted in the SVMHS being designated as a site for collaboration in the Australian Multi-site WHO Collaborating Centre in Research and Training in Mental Health.

 

St. Vincent’s Mental Health Service (SVMHS) in collaboration with The University of Melbourne is offering tailored clinical training placements (The Postgraduate Overseas Specialist Training or 
POST Program) for psychiatrists, nurses and allied health professionals from the Asia-Pacific region.

Service Development and collaboration

 

The SVMHS actively promotes collaborative liaison with local Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Service (PDRS), local Divisions of General Practice, Primary Care Partnerships, local government, private psychiatrists and other area Mental Health services.

 

It promotes change and service improvement through its Strategic Plan and Quality Improvement activities.

 

 

Awards

 

The service has been a finalist for awards from the Mental Health Services Conference (Australia and New Zealand) (TheMHS).

 

In 1998 St. Vincent's Mental Health Service received the Gold Medal Award for  “Comprehensive Catchment Area Service”, and in 2001 the Victorian Dual Disability service received a Gold Medal in the Specialist Service category.

 

In 2002, the General Practice Shared Care Program won a TheMHS bronze award in the Shared Care category.
