About Us

The Department of Addiction Medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital was established in 1964 as a “Special Clinic” of the Department of Medicine. Subsequently we became known as the Department of Community Medicine before adopting the title of the Department of Drug & Alcohol Studies in 1993 at which time the head of department became a joint (Professorial) appointment with the University of Melbourne.  In 2006 we decided to identify ourselves as the Department of Addiction Medicine to more accurately reflect the status of Addiction Medicine as a bona-fide medical speciality.
