The St. Vincent’s Hospital Hand Therapy Unit (HTU) is a
combined Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy service. It operates as a
separate satellite unit and is managed jointly by the Chief Occupational
Therapist and Chief Physiotherapist.
In July 2000, the HTU moved into a purpose-built facility
on the ground floor of the Bolte Wing. This was made possible through
sponsorship from Ansell. Before this, hand therapy patients were treated
separately in both the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Departments.
Commensurate with the values of the Sisters of Charity, the
Hand Therapy Unit strives for excellence in clinical practice.
The HTU is a state leader in the treatment and management
of hand conditions post plastics surgical intervention.
The Unit works closely with the Plastics & Reconstructive Surgical
Unit.
The HTU treats both in-patients and out-patients. Referrals
are received from St. Vincent’s Clinics and the in-patient units. Plastics,
Orthopaedics, Vascular and Rheumatology Units are the primary referral sources.
Referrals are also accepted from other units.
