Neurophysiology
The Neurophysiology Department is a diagnostic unit. Underlying all its activity is the measurement of electrical signals generated by muscle, nerve or brain. In addition to diagnostic value, serial testing may offer a parameter of the patient’s progress and may enable evaluation of responses to therapy.
Tests performed at St Vincent's
1. Electroencephalogragh (EEG) records electrical signals from the cortex of the brain and also videos the patient. Tests are conducted:
- for patients with known or possible epilepsy
- for patients with dizziness and/or LOC
2. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyograms (EMG) record the electrical activity of the nerves and the muscles respectively, particularly in the extremities. Tests are conducted:
- for patients with carpal tunnel
