For GPs

St Vincent’s GP Liaison Unit provides a consultancy service across the hospital to develop and improve the communication between general practice and services provided by St Vincent's.

Working to Improve Access to Specialist Clinics

St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Specialist Clinics wish to advise that they have commenced the implementation of the "Specialist Clinics in Victoria public hospitals Access Policy” (Department of Health August 2013). Click here for further information.

Some of the key principles of the policy are that health services:

• Work to improve access, and equality of access, to specialist clinic services
• Work to ensure there is timely and effective communication with patients and referrers at key stages of the specialist clinic pathway

To assist us in optimising patients' experiences and outcomes please ensure your referrals contain all clinical and other information necessary to appropriately prioritise the referral, manage the patients’ wait for services and their care at their first appointment.

Referrals which do not include all required information will be returned via fax to the referring GP with a request for this information to be provided. If the information is not provided within 30 days of request, the referral will be rejected.

The GP and the patient will be advised of this by letter; the patient will be requested to contact their GP for further follow up.

Victoria’s new Mental Health Act
On Tuesday 1 July, the new Mental Health Act 2014 commenced in Victoria
.  Please visit the Department of Health MHA Reform webpage if you would like further information:
www.health.vic.gov.au/mentalhealth/mhactreform/
While the new MH legislation primarily impacts the hospital based mental health staff, there will almost certainly be impacts for external stakeholders which interface with Mental Health and that provide treatment for people under compulsory (involuntary) treatment orders.

The Department of Health website includes a 57 minute video presentation which outlines the changes to the legislation with a particular focus on compulsory treatment pathways.

www.health.vic.gov.au/mentalhealth/mhactreform/resources.htm

The Department of Health has created an information sheet for General Practice which outlines the important changes.

For further information and resources concering changes to Victoria’s Mental Health Legislation the St Vincent's Library has prepared three documents:

Setting the Scene (Towards a new Mental Health Act)

Supported Decision Making (under the new Mental Health Act)

Compulsory Treatment Orders (new Mental Health Act)
