Continuing education 

St Vincent's Continuing Nurse Education Program is integral to the professional development of nursing clinicians within, and external to, St Vincent’s. The learning opportunities are offered across our multi-campus organisation to all Division 1 and 2 Registered Nurses and to clinicians from external organisations. Development of content continues to draw on our nursing and health professional expertise including the St Vincent’s Centre for Nursing Research and Simulation Centre and is delivered using varying formats.  

 

Current Continuing Nurse Education Programs include: 

Advanced Medical Study Day

This one day program delivers current information regarding a broad range of medical conditions and treatments, presented by clinicians from varied disciplines and departments.

Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) Workshop (St Vincent's Nursing Staff only)

This program is offered to senior Grade 2 Registered Nurses and newly appointed Associate Nurse Unit Managers to assist with the knowledge and skills required when taking on in-charge responsibilities. This is a 2 day workshop and attendance is required on both days.

Care of the Older Person Study Day

This is a one day program aimed at nurses interested in developing their knowledge base and clinical practice in caring for older persons.

Diabetes Update Study Day

This program allows nurses to expand their knowledge base in Diabetes Management and theory and apply this in clinical setting. Courses are run for both acute and sub-acute staff.

Advanced 12 Lead ECG Course

This course is aimed at Division 1 nurses wishing to increase their knowledge and skills when assessing 12 Lead ECG's. This course is scheduled in the morning over 5 consecutive fortnights.

Heart Starter Study Day

This is study day is less intensive option for nurses as an alternative to the ECG course, designed to develop knowledge of common cardiac conditions and treatments and basic ECG interpretation.

Medical Emergency Study Day (St Vincent's Nursing Staff only)

This study day is designed to increase the knowledge and skill of nurses in sub-acute areas in recognising and treating the deteriorating patient. This study day is a combination of lectures and practical simulation. Staff are allocated by managers to attend this study day.

Neuro Rehab Study Day

This study day aims to provide nurses working in sub-acute areas with knowledge of varied neurological conditions and current and future rehabilitation requirements. This study day is delivered from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Neurosciences Study Day

This is a one day program for nurses interested in developing their knowledge base and assessment skills in caring for patients with neurological conditions. Presenters include members of multidisciplinary teams involved with this patient group and cover topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Seizure Management and Allied Health input.  

Orthopaedic Twilight Series

Over 4 consecutive weeks (evening sessions) participants will better come to understand current best practice in Orthopaedic nursing and develop clinical knowledge of some common orthopaedic conditions and treatment.

Palliative Care Study Day

This is a one day introductory program aimed at nurses interested in developing their knowledge base and clinical practice in Palliative Care nursing, resulting in holistic provision of care for terminal patients.

Perioperative Twilight Series

This introductory program to Perioperative Nursing aims to develop basic skills and knowledge in this specialty area which may be adopted in other clinical settings. This series is run over 5 consecutive weeks during the evening.

Preceptorship Study Day (St Vincent's Nursing Staff only)

This one day program teaches preceptorship principles to enable participants to support Nurses during the different stages of their career development from Undergraduates to Postgraduates.

Respiratory Study Day

This study day aims to develop knowledge and skills in nursing patients with respiratory complications/diseases, caring of tracheostomies and non-invasive ventilation.

VAC Workshop (St Vincent's Nursing Staff only)

This 4 hour interactive workshop aims to assist nurses to develop specific wound dressing skills when caring for a patient with a VAC dressing/device.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Workshop (St Vincent's Nursing Staff only)

This 4 hour interactive workshop is designed to increase knowledge and awareness of venous thromboembolism, disease state and prevalence. Participants will be able to better identify patients at risk of developing venous thromboembolism and better select appropriate prophylactic regimens.

Wound Management Study Day

Attendees will be provided with current information to apply and promote best clinical practice when managing patient wounds. Expert presenters will improve participant’s confidence in appropriately assessing and dressing a variety of wounds. This day study day is offered for both acute and sub-acute settings.

Nursing Forums (St Vincent's Staff only)

Nursing Forums are held weekly and provide all nursing staff with diverse practical and theoretical evidence based nursing knowledge applicable to the clinical setting. Presenters come from a variety of backgrounds, from nursing staff and educators to members of the health teams, medical teams, government and advisory committees.
