Philosophy
The St
Vincent's
Neurosciences
Care
Centre
provides
a
supportive
and
friendly
learning
environment
whereby
postgraduate
nursing
students
are
mentored
and
encouraged
to
develop
specialist
knowledge
and
skills.
In an
environment
which
facilitates
multidisciplinary
teamwork,
the
Neurosciences
Course
offers
clinical
experience
and
education
in the
areas of
telemetry
and
seizure
management
and pre
and
post-operative
care of
patients
undergoing
craniotomy
and
spinal
surgery.
During
the
Neurosciences
Course
clinical
support
is
maintained
throughout
the year
by our
experienced
Neurosciences
nursing
staff.
The
Neurosciences
Care
Centre
The
Neurosciences
Unit is
a 24 bed
major
tertiary
referral
centre,
which
includes
3
telemetry
and
seizure
beds and
4 high
dependency
monitored
beds.
Monitoring
includes
intracranial
pressure
and
central
venous
pressure
monitoring.
Patients
admitted
to this
unit
undergo
a
variety
of minor
and
major
neurosurgical
procedures
and
diagnostic
tests.
The Unit
is
considered
a leader
in the
field of
Epilepsy
surgery
and
other
innovative
practices
and
provides
expert
care for
acute
pre and
post-op
Neurosurgical
patients.
The
Neurosciences
Course
The
Neurosciences
certificate
course
is
offered
over 1
year
full
time
commencing
in
March.
The
course
consists
of 4
subjects;
2
subjects
are
offered
online
with
Australian
Catholic
University;
the
remaining
2
subjects
are
delivered
on site
at St
Vincent's
by
experienced
medical,
nursing
and
allied
health
staff.
Students
are
required
to
attend
lectures
on site
at St
Vincent’s
3 hours
per week
for a
total of
24
weeks. A
feature
of the
program
is
‘Vincent’
– the
human
simulator;
students
have the
opportunity
to
experience
one
session
each
semester
in the
simulator
centre
thereby
enhancing
their
overall
clinical
experience.
At the
completion
of the
course
the
student
will be
expected
to be
proficient
in all
areas of
neurosciences
nursing.
Desired
Entry
Requirements
·
Be a
Registered
Nurse
Division
1 Grade
2 Year 2
or
above.
·
Hold a
practising
certificate
from
Nurses
Board of
Victoria.
·
Demonstrate
a strong
interest
in
Neuroscience
nursing.
·
Have a
strong
commitment
to their
professional
development.
