Motivate Your Mind...Enrol in Postgraduate Education...

Our Philosophy
The St Vincent's Neurosciences Care Centre provides a supportive and friendly learning environment whereby postgraduate nursing students are mentored and encouraged to develop specialist knowledge and skills.  In an environment which facilitates multidisciplinary teamwork, the Neurosciences Course offers clinical experience and education in the areas of telemetry and seizure management and pre and post-operative care of patients undergoing craniotomy and spinal surgery. During the Neurosciences Course clinical support is maintained throughout the year by our experienced Neurosciences nursing staff.

The Neurosciences Care Centre
The Neurosciences Unit is a 24 bed major tertiary referral centre, which includes 3 telemetry and seizure beds and 4 high dependency monitored beds. Monitoring includes intracranial pressure and central venous pressure monitoring.  Patients admitted to this unit undergo a variety of minor and major neurosurgical procedures and diagnostic tests. The Unit is considered a leader in the field of Epilepsy surgery and other innovative practices and provides expert care for acute pre and post-op Neurosurgical patients.

The Neurosciences Course
The Neurosciences certificate course is offered over 1 year full time commencing in March.  The course consists of 4 subjects; 2 subjects are offered online with Australian Catholic University; the remaining 2 subjects are delivered on site at St Vincent's by experienced medical, nursing and allied health staff. Students are required to attend lectures on site at St Vincent’s 3 hours per week for a total of 24 weeks. A feature of the program is ‘Vincent’ – the human simulator; students have the opportunity to experience one session each semester in the simulator centre thereby enhancing their overall clinical experience.  At the completion of the course the student will be expected to be proficient in all areas of neurosciences nursing.
